Zao cosmetics are only formulated from natural ingredients, such as vegetable oils, waxes, plant extracts (bamboo, shea butter, apricot kernel, corn etc), without the addition of synthetic preservatives or synthetic fragrances.
We select ingredients from organic farming, with our overall formulas certified organic by Ecocert and COSMOS, therefore respectful of skin, the environment and all sentient beings. The colours used in our products are obtained exclusively from natural pigments (ie minerals and plants).
The ingredients are chosen according to their specific properties to create a premium makeup range in terms of colour, texture, finish, durability and ingredient quality and nourishment to skin.

Here are a few ingredients we use…
Organic carnauba wax
Secreted by the leaves of a palm tree native to Brazil, this wax is a film-forming agent that protects the skin by producing a continuous film and improves makeup hold.
Extract of gingko biloba leaves
It is an excellent cosmetic ingredient that repairs skin and acts as a powerful antioxidant. Thanks to the flavonoids it contains, it is a very effective defence against the free radicals responsible for skin aging. On the other hand, the active ingredients it contains also promote the production of collagen, fibres that help maintain the skin's elasticity.
Apricot kernel oil
This oil is rich in oleic acid, vitamin A and E. In addition to being nourishing and soothing, it gives a boost to your skin. Regenerating and moisturising, it helps to delay the effects of ageing.
Organic pomegranate butter
Today widely used in medicine, pomegranate extract not only offers an excellent level of hydration, but it is a valuable aid in cell regeneration and to combat against free radicals responsible for skin aging. By increasing collagen synthesis, it prevents the formation of fine lines.
Bamboo
Bamboo is the key ingredient of the Zao Makeup brand. Used in the form of hydrolate, powder and macerate in Zao products, it is extremely rich in organic silica, which when used exogenously, helps to maintain the elasticity of our tissues and skin.
Organic castor oil
It is an interesting oil because it is compatible with all skin types. Emollient and moisturising, it limits water loss while softening skin. It also stimulates the production of collagen and elastin to prevent and reduce fine lines. Finally, it is ideal for acne-prone skin because it has a high content of ricinoleic acid, which eliminates the bacteria involved in acne.
Organic rice powder
Rice powder is one of the oldest cosmetic ingredients and is ideal for the most sensitive skin. It is composed of B vitamins, iron and magnesium which give it mattifying, purifying and softening properties.
Organic aloe vera
As a powder or gel, the soothing and regenerating properties of aloe vera impart the necessary softness for beautiful skin.
Organic shea butter
Shea butter is extracted from shea nuts, a tree grown only in the wild in the savannahs of West Africa. Its composition rich in fatty acid gives it moisturising and nourishing properties.
Plant-based squalene
Extracted from olive oil, vegetable Squalene is a derivative of squalene, which is a natural component of human sebum. Its excellent affinity with the skin, due to its similarity with natural cutaneous lipids, whilst its emollient properties make it an ideal active ingredient. It strengthens the cutaneous hydrolipidic barrier, softens the skin and protects it from dehydration.
Organic acacia gum
Acacia gum or Arabic gum, which comes from the resin secreted by the Acacia Senegal tree, is used as a texture agent in the first instance and also as an adhesion agent to improve the hold of Zao Mascaras and Eyeliners.
