Formulas 100% from natural origin*
Zao Makeup is committed to offering makeup products with irreproachable formulas, using only 100% of ingredients from natural origin*. Without petrochemical derivatives or synthetic preservatives, Zao products are healthy for your skin. Our raw materials are obtained by a non-polluting and simple transformation of a plant or a mineral such as plant extracts, vegetable oils and butters, mineral pigments. As a result of our ecological and ethical commitments, we obtained the award “Slow Cosmetic” in 2014.
The quality of our raw materials is also of paramount importance. That’s why we are always looking for new natural ingredients to ensure our products are the best that nature can offer. Among these ingredients are the micronised silver powder which, in addition to being an excellent skin-friendly preservative, has amazing antiseptic properties. Although it is very expensive, we have chosen to use it in almost all of our products.
Organic farming prioritised
All of our products are certified organic or natural by Ecocert (according to the Ecocert Greenlife and Cosmos Standard standards) , also holding Cosmebio*, the COSMOS Organic label.
From the beginning of the Zao adventure, we made the choice to focus on raw materials from organic farming. By choosing ingredients that are free of chemical fertilisers and pesticides, we minimize soil and groundwater pollution, protect biodiversity and take care of your health.
Our makeup range also has an increased biocompatibility with the skin. Indeed, active ingredients contained in organic plants are much more concentrated than in plants from conventional agriculture.
* Except Nail Polishes that are '10 free', free of 10 known toxicants traditionally found in nail polish.
Respect for animals
For the sake of respect for all living creatures, none of our finished products and none of our raw materials are tested on animals. We exclude the use of ingredients of animal origin, such as beeswax and cochineal (red pigment). All Zao products are thus Vegan and Cruelty free labelled by PETA. In addition, our brushes are made of synthetic bristles as opposed to bristles from animal origin.
Refillable makeup
We have created refillable packaging to achieve the following goals:
Ecological: By creating a refillable system, we choose to consider the environment. As a result of our refillable packaging, we produce less waste, use less plastic and consume less energy.
Economical: The packaging has a direct impact on the price of the product. By proposing to refill your products, we offer you the opportunity to enjoy premium quality makeup at a very affordable price.
Playful: Our refillable packaging allows you to easily alternate all the colours depending on the mood, season or occasion.
Sustainable packaging
Eco-design is at the heart of our thinking. That’s why our primary packaging is bamboo. It is an ecological raw material because it has a phenomenal growth without the need of any fertilisers or pesticides. Bamboo only needs 4 to 5 years to regenerate against a minimum of 30 years for a tree! The bamboo used for our packaging grows in endemic forests in protected areas.
Our secondary packaging is also made from bamboo. Our glass products are sold in elegant cotton pouches to further protect them. These pouches can be reused for other uses, unlike cardboard cases which are immediately thrown away. These pouches are also available for gifting purposes.

Although we are an organic, vegan and cruelty-free makeup brand, quality and innovation remain at the heart of our focus. Convinced that organic makeup can compete with conventional makeup, we endeavour to offer continually enhanced products.
